Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Eagle Lake Headlight, November 11, 1965 Duncan, Annie Jo (Gardner) Long-Time Eagle Lake Resident Mrs. Duncan Dies Eagle Lake community lost another of its beloved longtime residents at 10:40 p.m. last Wednesday, November 3rd, when Mrs. I. V. Duncan passed away in the Laughlin Hospital. She had been confined to the hospital for three weeks prior to her death. She was born Annie Joe Gardner, the daughter of Judge B. H. Gardner and Carrie Bonner Gardner on October 30th 1883, in Fairfield, Texas. Shortly afterwards her parents moved to Palestine where she lived until her marriage to I. V. Duncan on October 9th, 1906. They lived at Egypt, Texas until they moved to their ranch near Eagle Lake on December 26th, 1910. The family members have been prominent residents of this community since that time and engage in ranching and rice farming interest in this area. Funeral services were held the afternoon of Friday, Nov. 5th, from the Christ Episcopal Church in Eagle Lake. Officiating at the services were the Rev. Roland Resley, Episcopal Minister from Wharton, and her nephew, the Rev. Al Dealey, Presbyterian Minister from Dallas. Mrs. R. R. Wells, Jr. was organist. She was placed to final rest in the Lakeside Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers were nephews: R Sewell of Sherman, Ben Sewell of Houston, Ben Carpenter of Dallas and P. A. Kostad Jr. of Palestine. Others were R. R. Wells Jr. and David Wintermann of Eagle Lake. She is survived by: her husband I. V. Duncan; her son, Gardner C. Duncan; grandchildren, Dianne Duncan and Vance C. Duncan and sisters Mrs. Will Keller of Palestine, Mrs. W. A. Dealey of Dallas, and Mrs. P. A. Kostad of Palestine. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church, the Women of Christ Episcopal Church, a charter member of the Eagle Lake Club, the Eagle Lake Garden Club and the Daughter of the American Revolution. She was one of the founders and the long-time director of the Eagle Lake Little Theater. She served as a trustee of the Calhoun School District. Mrs. Duncan received a B. A. Degree from the University of Texas in 1905 where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Ashbel Literary Society and was vice-president of her senior class at Texas. She was a long time member of the University of Texas Ex-Student's Association. Her faithful service to her community and friends through these and many other activities won her great esteem not only among the citizens of this area, but over the entire state.
