Fairfield Recorder, Fairfield Texas Friday, October 9, 1925 FORMER WORTHAM CITIZEN KILLED IN PISTOL DUEL Walter EARLS, 54, Ennis farmer, was killed and Charles W. WINTERROWD, Deputy Sherriff, was wounded in a shooting affray in front of the City Hall in Ennis Friday. EARLS was shot several times through the body and died on the way to the hospital. WINTERROWD was shot thru the calf of each leg. His wounds not being serious. It is said that the shooting grew out of a difference that had existed for four or five weeks. EARLS is survived by his widow, four sons and a daughter. EARLS shot and killed Officer MADDOX in Corsicana twenty years ago while MADDOX had him under arrest on a statutory charge from Freestone County. Our recollection being that EARLS home was in or near Wortham at the time. After staff legal battles, EARLS finally beat the case in Freestone and also the murder case growing out of the killing of MADDOX.
