Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Fairfield Recorder - March 17, 2011 edition JACK DAVIS FISCHER Funeral services were held last Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Fairfield for Jack Davis Fischer, 88, of Fairfield who died March. Interment followed at Fairfield Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Mr. Fischer was born Nov. 23, 1923 in Fairfield to Bernard and Grace Davis Fischer. He was a 1941 graduate of Fairfield high school and entered the air force on Feb. 16, 1943. After training, he was assigned to the 303rd Bomb Group stationed in Molesworth, England. On Aug. 15, 1944, his plane was shot down over Germany on the 11th mission and he was taken prisoner at Prum where he remained for eight and one half months. During his imprisonment, he was made to participate in the 86-day, 600- mile death march across the Baltic through frozen Poland. Mr. Fischer was liberated on May 2, 1945 and discharged on Oct. 31, that same year with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Medals he received during World War II are: World War II Victory Medal, European Theatre of Operations, Good Conduct, Air Medal, Purple Heart and Prisoner of War medals. In 1949, Mr. Fischer graduated from Sam Houston with a Bachelor of Science degree and in 1952 with a Masters in Education. He taught school in Cleveland as well as in Texas City for 36 years, and after retirement, he returned to Fairfield where he resided until his death. Mr. Fischer was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Fairfield Masonic Lodge for 60 years, Freestone County Historical Commission, Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and American Ex-POWs Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and gardening and was known as a real outdoorsman and sportsman. Mr. Fischer was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Jean Blalock Fischer. He is survived by wife Joy Aultman Fischer of Fairfield; daughter Kay Ann Fischer of Philomath, OR; step-sons Gary Gibson and wife Debbie of Houston and Alan Gibson and wife Cathy of Wortham; Step-grandchildren J. Alan Gibson, Jr. of Carrollton, and Kasi Wright and husband Sam of Wortham; step-greatgranddaughter Samantha Wright of Wortham; and many cousins and friends. Pallbearers were Warren Davis, George Davis, John Awalt, John Alan Gibson, Jr., Sam Wright, John David Aultman, John Fryer, and Charles Burks. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. John H. Keller, Lindale Phillips, O.B. (Spookie) Utley, Wayne Donaldson, Billie Ray Vestal, Jack Browder, and members of the Masonic Lodge and Men of Pilgrim Sunday school class at Calvary Baptist Church.
