Freestone County, Texas Obituaries, Memorials, and Death Notices The Fairfield Recorder - Friday, April 9, 1897 Page: 5 OBITUARY Died, March 30,1897, Ellis Foreman. Ellis was an ex-slave of Mr. Oliver Carter, in fact was raised by that gentleman, and if association has anything to do with the formation of ones character, Ellis’ character for truth and intelligence must have been formed from his early association with such men as Judge Kirven, Tom Kirven and the Carter family, all noted for their intelligence and veracity. Ellis stood head and shoulders the peer in intelligence of any of his surrounding colored neighbors, and in his death Woodland loses one of her best colored citizens, the school loses an excellent trustee, his wife leaves a faithful husband and the little children he leaves behind lose a dutiful father. Having lived in this county since during the war, now after an illnesss of over a year from consumption, he goes to meet friends, both white and colored, who await judgment at the hands of Him who judges men justly, according to their deeds, be they good or bad.
