Freestone County, Texas Obits Houston Chronicle newspaper - 6/20/2006 edition OTHO GIBSON passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, after a long- term illness. Mr. Gibson, a retired H.I.S.D. principal, has joined his parents, Charlie and Elmira Gibson, siblings and son, Donald, in their celestial home. Otho Gibson was born in Freestone County, TX on October 29, 1925. After completing his high school education, he served in the United States Navy during World War II. Otho Gibson received his Bachelor of Arts Degree and Masters Degree in Education from Texas Southern University. He began his professional career with the Harris County Probation Department before joining the Houston Independent School District, where he served as a teacher, counselor, administrator and secondary school principal, until his retirement in 1986. During his lifetime, Otho Gibson was affiliated with a variety of professional, civic and community organizations, including Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Texas State Teachers Association, National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa Professional Fraternity for Educators, Kappa Alpha Psi Social Fraternity, Houston Association of School Administrators, Texas Retired Teachers Association, Houston Harris County Retired Teachers Association, Harris County Grand Jury and the NAACP. Otho Gibson had a lifelong passion for education and motivating people to strive for excellence and realize their full potential. Otho was happiest when he was traveling, reading and mentoring colleagues, friends and youth, but most of all his family which he cherished. Otho Gibson is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Maudesta Gibson; daughter Linda Hunter, of Dallas, TX, retired principal, daughter and son-in-law Dr. Regina and Judge John Kyles; grandchildren Donna Johnson of Odessa, TX, Tarik Hunter and Tangi Hunter; 3 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Public viewing will occur at Johnson Funeral Home from 2:00-9:00 pm on Monday, June 19, 2006. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 11:00 am at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, with interment to follow at Houston National Cemetery.
