Funeral services for Calvin Norris Greely, Jr., 74, were held on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at the Rodeo Arena of the Wharton County Fairgrounds. Reverend Tommy Phillips and Reverend Allen Branch officiated and interment was at the Pin Oak Community Cemetery. Calvin learned to ride horses in the pastures with his father at the age of three. He won his first roping contest at the age of 14 with a prize of $35.00. He was known nationally and internationally throughout the Rodeo World as a g reat roper, teacher and mentor. He has trained, ridden, and owned great roping horses and steer dogging horses. He held memberships in the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, The International Rodeo Association, Southwest Cowboy Association, Senior Pro Rodeo Association, United States Calf Roping Association, National Old Timers Rodeo Association, National Cowboys of Color and The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo Association. He was a 2009 nominee for The National Cowboy of Color Hall of Fame. Mr. Greely passed away at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco, Texas on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, among loving family and friends. Mr. Greely is survived by his wife Shirley Greely of Teague; his sons Lawrence Greely of Taylor, Texas, Kevin Wayne Greely and wife Amanda of Teague-Katy, Texas, Stephan DeWayne Greely and wife Tabatha of Kaufman, Texas; his daughters Beverly Greely of Houston, Texas, Annette Greely of Taylor, Texas, Ramona Gayle Wilson and husband Alfred, Jr. of Round Rock, Texas; his sisters Ella Mae Williams and husband Robert of El Campo, Texas, Ruby Bishop of El Campo, Texas and Vernell Brown and husband Sonny of Bloomington, Texas; 13 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; adopted sons; adopted brothers; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
