Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Teague Chronicle August 8, 2009 edition ELLEN (SCRUGGS) GUNTER Graveside services for Ellen Gunter, 83, were held on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Lake Chapel Cemetery near Fairfield. Rev. Harry Moore officiated. Ellen was born the fifth of eleven children to John Carter and Sarah Scruggs on March 10, 1926, in Fairfield. Mrs. Gunter was a dedicated homemaker and very dedicated wife of over sixty-five years to her husband, Cullen C. Gunter. Mr. and Mrs. Gunter did everything together, one was rarely seen without the other. She loved the outdoors, working in the yard with her husband, and just spending time outside in the fresh air. She passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at the Fairfield Nursing and Rehab Center. Mrs. Gunter is survived by her husband, Cullen C. Gunter; one son, James Don Gunter and wife Janna Sue; one daughter, Mary Ellen Golden and husband Richard all of Fairfield; one grandson, James Gunter, Jr. of Spring; one granddaughter, Kristi Chick and husband Roger; one great-granddaughter, Sierra Schick; two step-great-grandchildren, Montana and Zachary Chick all of Palestine; four brothers, Clarence Scruggs and wife Freida of Fairfield, Lynn Carter Scruggs of Rockdale, Billy Newman Scruggs and wife Doris of Fairfield, and Clinton Scruggs and wife Mollie of Teague; five sisters, Lizzie Crouch of Corsicana, Jewel Morris of Fairfield, Fay Ward and husband Frank of Fairfield, Grace Pannell of Garland, and Sarah Poteete of Whitesboro; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mrs. Gunter was preceded in death by her parents, John Carter and Sarah Scruggs; and one sister, Mary Lee Lander.
