Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Bill L. Halbert, M.D. (January 9, 1931 - August 9, 2014) Funeral services for Dr. Bill L. Halbert, 83, were held on Thursday, August 14, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Teague. Bro. Scott Matthews officiated. Interment will follow the services at Greenwood Cemetery. Dr. Halbert passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2014, after a lengthy illness in Fairfield, at the Fairfield Nursing and Rehab Center. Dr. Halbert was a longtime practicing physician in Teague for 45 years. He came to join the medical practice of Drs. Maurice Gage and Jack Cox after having been graduated in 1956 from Baylor University College of Medicine, serving his internship at Hermann Hospital in Houston, and serving on the medical staff of Mexia State School for one year. Dr. Halbert served on the medical staff of the City Hospital from 1958 until the Teague General Hospital opened and then to its closing, a combined period of 30 years. Also, he was an active member of the Freestone County Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Texas Medical Association. For three years Dr. Halbert served on the board and as president of the Texas State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners. For 30 years, he served as Division Surgeon for Ft. Worth and Denver, Rock Island, and Burlington Northern Railroad. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Teague for 56 years and enjoyed singing in the adult choir and teaching various classes for many of those years. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Basil T. and Edna Halbert, his brother, George Halbert, and sister, Tommie Haynes. He is survived by Audrey M. Halbert, his wife of 62 years. Also surviving are his children: Belinda Baldree and husband David of Orange, Texas, Denise Bruton and husband Pete of Arlington, Texas and William Blair Halbert and wife Irene of Midlothian, Texas. He was blessed with nine grandchildren and their spouses; Brad and Jennifer Baldree of Cypress, Megan Baldree of Abilene, Jordan and Chelsea Baldree of Katy. Amanda and Josh Farmer of Australia, Morgan Bruton of Austin, and Peyton Bruton of Arlington. Brooke Halbert of Lubbock, Candace Halbert and Cody Blake of Plano and Shannon Halbert of Midlothian. Great grandchildren are Braelyn and Anna Kate Baldree, Mckinley and Kyler Farmer and Hunter Blake. Bill is also survived by one sister, Mary Sims and husband, Henry, and brother- in-law Billy Haynes, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bowers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
