Mexia Daily News - Aug. 5, 2003 edition Rites held for retired Teague Coach, Principal TEAGUE - Funeral services for longtime Teague resident Charles William (Bill) Hancock, 90, were conducted this morning at 10 o'clock in First United Methodist Church. The Reverends Charles Jordan and James C. Gibson officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, under direction of Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home. Mr. Hancock, born March 10, 1913, in Donie, attended Donie and Teague schools before graduating from Jewett High School in 1932. He was an outstanding athlete in many sports, including track and earned the high-point distinction at the State Track Meet. He attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville on a football scholarship, then finished his Bachelor's degree at Sam Houston State University. He then went on to Baylor to receive his Master's degree. Mr. Hancock served his country in the U.S. Army for two years in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he received the Good Conduct medal. He was married Aug. 26, 1938, to Hazel Duran, and returned to Teague where he was a coach from 1942 to 1952, then became Principal of Teague High School, serving in that capacity from 1952 to 1974. Then he became Educational Director with the Freestone-Navarro County Educational Co-op before retiring in 1978. Mr. Hancock was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for over 55 years and taught the Junior High Boys Sunday School Class, and served for seven years as Sunday School Superintendent. He taught the Men's Coffee Class for 37 years and was a charter member of the Methodist Men's Club which he served as Treasurer for many years. Mr. Hancock was also active in community organizations, such as the Teague Rotary Club, and was a past-president of the Teague Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by his parents, by three brothers and by three sisters. Surviving are his wife of over 64 years, Mrs. Hazel Hancock; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Carl Shields of Teague; two sons, John Hancock of Dallas and David Hancock of Teague; five grandchildren and seven great-granddaughters, and numerous nieces and nephews.
