Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Obituary of Riley Hatcher The Fairfield Recorder - Friday, June 29, 1900 issue DEATH OF A WELL KNOWN COLORED MAN: Died, near Fairfield, Texas, on Sunday, June 24th, 1900, of cancer of the stomach, at the residence of his son, Henry, Riley Hatcher, in his 83d year. He was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, April 1st, 1818. He was of the original Governor Bennett Stock, always honorable, always true. He was removed from North Carolina to Georgia in early childhood, to Alabama in boyhood, "Uncle Riley" as everybody called him, was brought to this country in 1859, by his former owner the late Dr. R. J. Hatcher, who lived for many years a few miles east of Fairfield. The deceased was married twice, his first wife, Mary Ann Riddell, died 43 years ago. His second wife, Carrie Daniel, died 18 years ago. The write knew Riley intimately for 55 years. --- A White Friend
