E. Hill, Sr., aged 79, died at his home in Fairfield at 9:30 p.m. Monday following a few days illness from paralysis. Burial was in the Fairfield cemetery Tuesday afternoon following religious services conducted by the Rev. James Morgan, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church assisted by Rev. J. F. Stanley, a former pastor of the church. Mr. Hill was a native of Mississippi, his parents coming to Freestone County when he was twelve years old and locating in the Blount neighborhood ten miles east of Fairfield. Mr. Hill grew up there and in his early years became interested in cattle, becoming one of the leading cattlemen in this section. About 40 years ago he moved to Fairfield and entered the mercantile business and began buying land, becoming probably the largest landowner in Freestone County. Later, with his son, F. E. Hill, Jr., became interested in the Fairfield State Bank, which under their management became, and is now, one of the strongest institutions of its kind in East Central Texas. Mr. Hill had a strong personality and was a striking figure, commanding attention wherever he went. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Fairfield. As a tribute to his popularity, his burial was attended by leading citizens of Corsicana, Mexia, Teague, Wortham, Oakwood and other towns, besides a large attendance of his old friends and neighbors. He is survived by one son, F. E. Hill, Jr., and three grandsons, Frederick, Richard and Suel Hill of Fairfield.
