Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Teague Chronicle October 2007 JACK HINTON Graveside services for Mr. Jack Hinton were held on Sunday, September 30, 2007, at Sardis Cemetery near Jewett. Rev. Jerry House, Jr. conducted the services. Mr. Hinton passed away on Friday, September 28, 2007, at St. Joseph Health Center in Bryan. He was born and raised in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School. He served his country in World War II in both the United States Navy and the United States Army. Both before and after his military service he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Ennis and Sanderson. He was best known as a longtime banker and civic leader in Jewett. He began his banking career in 1952 and served as the President of the State Bank of Jewett for many years. He retired as bank president in 1984 but retained his title of Chairman of the Board. At the time of his death he was serving the bank as Chairman Emeritus. He was honored by the Texas Bankers Association with a Fifty Year Banker Award in 2005. Mr. Hinton was instrumental in establishing the Jewett E.M.S. He served in all capacities of city government from 1955 to 1957 including City Secretary, Alderman, and Mayor Pro-tem. From the late 1960s and into the 1970s he served as Mayor for the City of Jewett as well as Mayor Pro-tem. He also served again as Alderman from 1987 to 1989. Mr. Hinton loved to travel with his wife in their motor home especially their numerous trips to Canada. He was an avid golfer and a tremendous animal lover. He was a Methodist. Mr. Hinton is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Naelyn Hinton, his daughters Deborah L. Kovacevich and husband Nick, Jr. of College Station and Dianna Johnson and husband Charles of Jewett and three granddaughters Saysha Kovacevich of College Station, Charli Phillips and husband Mathew of Waco and Tiffani Johnson of Jewett. Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home of Jewett was in charge of the arrangements.
