Mrs. Verlon Holmes

Funeral services for Mrs. Verlon Holmes, age 87, were held on Sunday, April 6, 
2014, at 2:00p.m. at Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home in Jewett. Her son-in-law, Bill 
Hughes, officiated. Interment followed the services at Sardis Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Saturday with the family present from 6:00p.m. until 
8:00p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Holmes passed away on Friday, April 4, 2014, at the Limestone Medical 
Center in Groesbeck. She was born and raised in Freestone County near Donie on 
August 26, 1926, and graduated from Donie High School with the class of 1943. 
She married Joe H. Holmes on July 31, 1945 and shared over sixty-eight years 
together. Mrs. Holmes loved to cook and chicken fried steak was her specialty. 
She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother to her 
family. Mrs. Holmes was a member of Sardis Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Joe H. Holmes; one daughter, Sandra Hughes & 
husband Bill all of Jewett; two granddaughters, Kimberly Thompson & husband 
Tommy of Keller, and Kristi Hughes of Round Rock; two greatgrandchildren, 
Michael Thompson and Katelyn Thompson; one brother, Welton Walker & wife Pauline 
of Groesbeck; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her sister, Irene Story.
