Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Obituary of Martha Ann Huckaby The Texas Pioneer newspaper - July 11, 1857 (Vol. 2, No. 24) issue at Freestone County Museum "DIED - At the residence of her father, 4 miles South of this place, on the 3rd inst., Martha Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Huckaby, aged 7 years, 2 months and 23 days. The demise of her ???? so tender ????? disease having commenced a prey upon her vitals three years ago. During her long and protracted illness she suffered an agony and distress impossible to portray, yet she bore it in a spirit of calm composure and resignation more apposite to one upon whom the 'weight of years had fallen' than a little child of unaccountability. The 'grim monster' had no terrors for her. But a few moments anterior to her death she regretted she would never more see her Aunt Martha who was absent, and requested her mother 'not to cry for her as it would do her no good'. Scarcely had she given utterance to the last sentence when from her mother's arms she fell lifeless - a cold corpse. In the twinkling of an eye her immortal spirit winged its flight to a Paradise land where now it reposes on the bosom of its God. She liv'd as lives a peaceful dove, She died as blossoms die; And now her spirit floats above. A seraph id the skies! G. B. T.
