Freestone County, Texas Obits The Bryan-College Station Eagle Sunday, October 22, 2006 Dr. Lela Mae Jeffrey-Kirby March 23, 1925 - October 19, 2006 Dr. Lela Mae Jeffrey- Kirby passed away Thursday, October 19, 2006 at the age of 81. She passed away at home in College Station. Dr. Jeffrey was a native of Teague, Texas. She graduated as valedictorian from Teague High School and furthered her education at the University of Texas; Stephen F. Austin at Nacogdoches; and Scripps Institute of California, where she obtained a Masters of Science degree in Oceanography and a Masters in Physiology. In 1954 she was the only woman in the south with a MA in Oceanography. She was preceded in death by her father John C. Jeffrey; mother, Mary E. Jordon- Jeffrey; brother John T. Jeffrey; husband Chester Lyle Kirby. Survivors are her stepson Daniel Kirby and wife Wanda; grandson Corey Kirby; stepson Chester Lyle Kirby, Jr.; stepdaughters Charolet Rich and Eva Larkin; and several cousins. Additionally, Many friends and students will remember her lovingly. Visitation is scheduled for October 22, 2006 from 6 to 8 pm. And services will be Monday, October 23, 2006 at 10 am, both at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan, Texas. The final resting place will be at Wellborn Cemetery in Wellborn, Texas. The Rev. Henry Stovall of Trinity Baptist Church will officiate. Pallbearers are Mike Sterling, Tommy Lyons, Tom Bates, Jeff Handley, Landon Stasel and Nick Blythe.
