Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Teague Chronicle newspaper - Jan. 13, 1944 (Thursday) - page 1 Funeral Conducted For Gordon King Monday Afternoon Funeral services were conducted by Rev. L. F. Bain at Cotton Gin cemetery at 3:00 o'clock Monday afternoon [10 Jan 1944] for Gordon King, prominent pioneer citizen of this section, who passed away at his home here at 3:00 o'clock Sunday. Burial was immediately following the service. Born at Fairfield May 13, 1861, Mr. King moved to old Brewer with his parents when he was three years of age. He grew to manhood here, engaged in the mercantile business and was postmaster of old Brewer, operating the post office in his store near where the Booker T. Washington school now stands. When the railroad came and Brewer became Teague, Mr. King was the first postmaster of the new town. He was Treasurer of the City of Teague, and a charter stockholder and Director of the First National Bank. He was a school trustee for a number of years and his mercantile career in Brewer and Teague extended over a period of 42 years. Survivors include a daughter and two sons: Mrs. W. B. Humphries and Ernest King of Dallas; and Howard G. King of Van; a sister, Miss Levenia King of Teague. Active pall bearers were W. M. Lindsey, Eugene Wilson, S. L. Bryant, W. H. McSpadden, S. D.
