The Bryan - College Station Eagle February 16, 2004 Gene Knowles 1937 — 2004 Gene Knowles, age 66, of Bryan passed away Saturday, February 14, 2004. He was born October 15, 1937 in Winkler, Texas, to Orville and Era Gregory Knowles. Mr. Knowles lived in Bryan since 1962. He was an E-5 in the U.S. Navy and retired from the Bryan Police Department in 1995 as Lieutenant. He was the first commander of the Brazos County Narcotics Task Force and later led the Brazos Valley narcotics Task Force. He was a 32nd degree Mason in Winkler, Texas, and was the former head of the Detective Dept. of the Bryan Police Department. Mr. Knowles is survived by his wife, Barbara Knowles of Bryan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen Jean and Greg Van Dine of Spring, Texas, and Kathy and Leo Sonier of Austin, Texas; a sister, Christine Berryhill of Sherman, Texas; and a nephew, Bob Berryhill of VanAlstyne, Texas; six grandchildren, Matthew, Kelsey and Michael Van Dine and Caroline, Joseph and John Sonier. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at Calvary Baptist Church, Bryan, Texas, with Reverend David Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in Bryan City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. this evening at Hillier Funeral Home and from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
