Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Charles Korn (Died April 16, 2011) Charles Korn Coach Korn passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. He was born in Kerens and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Stephen F. Austin University and later a Master’s Degree from Baylor University. He married Carolyn on August 5, 1966 and shared over forty-four years together. Coach Korn worked as a teacher and coach for over forty years, with stops in Mexia, Frost, Dawson, Mildred, Red Oak, Overton, Kerens, and Teague. His last job was in Teague where he taught and coached for over ten years before retiring and was the head coach of the Varsity Lions Basketball team for part of that time. After his retirement, he went to work for the Mexia State School, overseeing teachers in their education department. Coach Korn’s favorite things were gardening, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Korn of Teague; two sons, Charlie Lester Von Staden & wife Kay of Belton and Kyle Lynn Von Staden & wife Lory of Eddy; one daughter, Amy Korn Curlett & husband Michael of Teague; four grandchildren, Hope Ashley Von Staden, Laynie Korn, Makayla Curlett, and Logan Curlett; two brother-in-laws, Larry Murray & wife Sue of Purdon and Dean Murray & wife Wilene of Arlington; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Coach Korn was preceded in death by his son, Scott Korn; and his parents, Charles Lester and Virgie Lee Korn Dannelley.
