Killed Near Cade

Again the people of this community are reminded that man is mortal and must 
pass away to that land from no traveler has ever return.

Mr. Joe Lamb, son of Mr. Sam Lamb, age about 18 years, was returning from the 
barbeque at Richland in the evening of June 22d in company with Mr. Will 
Hartfield, little thinking that in a few short hours he would be cold in death;
while ridng over the bridge over Elm, they were then taken by surprise to see 
about 30 yards ahead of them a run away team hitched to Mr. J.A. Hartfield's 
buggy coming at full speed. Mr. Will Hartfield succeeded in getting off the 
bridge and out of the way, while Mr. Lamb's horse was knocked down, and Mr.
Lamb trampled under the feet of the run away team, crushing his head in a most
shocking manner. He lived only 2 or 3 hours.

Mr. Hartfield dismounted and as quickly removed the buggy which had fallen upon
him and which probably helped caused his death as one was resting upon his head.
Mr. Hartfield raised him up, the work was done and he never spoke.

Mr. Lamb, a splendid young man, a good and consistent member of the Baptist 
Church and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He leaves an aged 
father and a large number of relatives to mourn his loss.

He was interred in the Lamb graveyard two miles northeast of Woodland on the 
following day by a concourse of 200 friends and relatives who stood with bowed
heads while Mr. Will T. Stubbs spoke a few words and offered prayer. Peace to
his ashes.
