Alice Lurlene Lamb, R.N. passed away peacefully with her family at her side May 16, 2014, at the age of 87. For the last year and a half she has lived in Carrollton, Texas near her son and daughter-in-law. She is predeceased by her parents Emmett and Lila Barger, husband Bobby S. Lamb, sisters Modene Carruth and Shirley Dillon, brothers David Barger and Dwain Barger. She is survived by her son, Steve Lamb and his wife Elizabeth Carroll Lamb of Carrollton, many nieces and nephews, friends and extended family. Lurlene was born in Teague, Texas, Freestone County on March 17, 1927, the second of five children. A child of the Great Depression, when she was old enough, Lurlene picked cotton alongside her parents and siblings. She graduated from Teague High School in 1944. She moved to Dallas to attend Parkland Nursing School, and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1947. She met Bobby while waiting at a bus stop in Dallas, prior to graduating from nursing school. They fell in love and were married in 1946. Lurlene was a true pioneer. She is officially recognized by Parkland Memorial Hospital and Dallas County as the first recovery room nurse in Texas. Hired and trained by Dr. M. T. “Pepper “Jenkins who was U.T. Southwestern Medical School Director of Anesthesia, they established the first recovery room in the state in 1949. She became Head Nurse and later Assistant Supervisor of Parkland Recovery Room. Of singular note, during her rewarding 35 year career at Parkland, was November 1963, when she cared for Governor John Connally, severely wounded during the assassination of President Kennedy. Lurlene retired from Parkland in June of 1985. Soon after, she and Bobby moved back to her hometown of Teague to be close to family and friends. She was a lifelong member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church in Teague, and a member of the “Over 55 Club” where she loved playing cards and dominoes with friends. She was an active volunteer at the local charity, The Lord’s Storehouse. Her hobbies included gardening and doing crossword puzzles with her sister. She loved, and was loved, by everyone she knew. Bowers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
