Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Fairfield Recorder newspaper May 7, 2009 Orand Lorenza "Lefty" Lambert Graveside services were held Tuesday for Orand Lorenza "Lefty" Lambert, 82, who died Friday, May 1. Mr. Lambert was born in Ward Prairie on June 26, 1926 and was raised in Fairfield and Galena Park. He graduated from Fairfield high school and joined the United States Navy in 1943. Mr. Lambert served during World War II aboard the destroyer escort USS Ringness, the first ship to arrive to the aid of the sinking USS Indianapolis. Following his naval career, Mr. Lambert gained employment with Armco Steel in Galena Park as a steel worker. After several years with the company, he had moved up to the position of general manager over the No. 2 Electric Furnace. Mr. Lambert was also active in his community serving as a trustee on the Galena Park Independent School District school board for 12 years and was a serious fan of the Galena Park high school football team. In 1983, he retired from Armco Steel and relocated to River Plantation near Conroe. He and his wife, Geneva, traveled extensively. Their trips included frequent visits with their children and grandchildren to Sea Island, Georgia and its Cloister Resort. In the early 90's, Mr. Lambert's wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. During the early stages, he cared for his wife at home. He even went as far as receiving instruction from the make-up experts at Merle Norman to "keep Mrs. Lambert as beautiful as she had always been." When it was necessary for her to be moved to a nursing home, Mr. Lambert visited his wife every day until she died in 1998. Prior to his death, Mr. Lambert was serving as president of the East Plantation Water Board of which he had been a member for over 30 years. His accomplishments with the organization included the construction of a second water well and an improvement in service. Services were Tuesday at Fairfield Cemetery. Mr. Lambert is survived by his daughter, Janie Lambert Shipley of Spring; daughter, Martha Lambert Robertson of Houston; and family friend Pam Campbell of Houston. He is also survived by grandchildren, Lauren Robertson Ratcliff and her husband, Dr. Taylor Ratcliff of Lubbock, Zachary Shipley of Spring, and Jonathan Robertson and partner Rob Davis of Columbia, South Carolina; and great- grandchildren, Austin Ratcliff and Madelyn Shipley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Lambert. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of Metcalf Funeral Directors in Conroe.
