Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Mexia Daily News - Feb 28, 2007 edition John Cleaves Mackey Services for John Cleaves Mackey, Tyler, are scheduled for 10:30 A.M, Monday, February 19, 2007 at First Christian Church with Rev. Barbara Morgan officiating. Burial will follow at Cathedral in the Pines under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home. Mr. Mackey passed away Friday, February 16, 2007 in Tyler at the age of 87. He was born in Winfield, Kansas but lived in Texas most of his life. His parents were John Rose & Viola Cleaves Mackey. After the untimely death of his mother, he was lovingly raised by his step-mother, Anna McLeod Mackey in Wortham. He graduated from the school of horticulture at Texas A & M University in 1940 and held a lifelong allegiance to the Texas Aggie Traditions. He worked in the nursery industry until his retirement. He served as a Major in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific during WW II serving on the island of Tinian. His membership as a Mason and Shriner spanned more than 50 years. The joy of his life was in serving his Lord in First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was an elder and a member of the Builders Class and Wednesday Morning Breakfast Bible Study. He was faithful in delivering Meals on Wheels for 10 years before his health began to fail about 5 years ago. John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mildred Roberson Mackey and his children and grandchildren; John R. Mackey & wife, Diane, J. T. & Josh of Austin, Amy M. Anderson & husband, David and children Katie & Matt of Tyler, Gordon R. Mackey & wife Wendy and Katie of Austin; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express appreciation for the many kindnesses shown during his long battle with Alzheimer’s.
