Fairfield Recorder - Mar. 22, 1918 edition One killed, two hurt in auto wreck A serious accident occured at 9:45 Tues. morning at a railroad crossing 3 miles north of Newby on the T& BV railroad when the southbound local freight crashed into a Ford touring car carrying four passengers. A Mr. Maker about 60 years of age was killed instantly. E. Ivys left leg was broken. He was seriously cut and bruised about the face and suffered concussion of the brain. Mrs. Ivys right leg was broken below and above the knee and she was otherwise bruised. The fourth passenger jumped and received only a sprained wrist. Mr. Ivy was in serious condition and was not expected to live. It is not positively known how the accident occurred except that the car stalled on the crossing which is very high and steep and the train was too close to stop before hitting the car. Engineer P. F. Warren was pulling the local freight train. Mr. Ivy had recently purchased the car and the party having been to Jewett on business were returning home. They lived between Newby and Donie. Physicians went from Teague and Jewett and gave assistance to the injured.
