Freestone County, Texas Obits Houston Chronicle newspaper - Monday 02/28/2005 edition MARTIN MAVIS "VALERIE" MARTIN, born on September 23, 1917 in Franklin County, Texas to Cecil Gray Condrey and Annie Mae Holder, passed away on February 26, 2005 in New Braunfels, Texas. Valerie was a graduate of Fairfield High School and Stephen F. Austin University, Class of 1939. Longtime mathematics instructor and counselor who retired from Spring Branch Jr. High. She was the Leader of the Junior Department of Fairbanks Methodist Church, sponsored the evening Intermediate Department, Past President of Fairbanks Elementary PTA, organized the first Kindergarten for Fairbanks Community; was a Cub Scout Leader and Girl Scout Leader. Valerie served, sponsored and was a director for Texas, East Coast and West Coast tours for Spring Branch ISD. In addition she was a member of Spring Branch Teachers Association, Texas State Teacher's Association, National Education Association, Texas Personnel Guidance Association, Life member Texas Congress Parents & Teachers and Delta Kappa Gamma Women Educators Sorority. Valerie took great pleasure as a ukulele player with the Happy Time Strummers and was a member of Fair Haven United Methodist Church, The Searchers Sunday School Class and The Morning Belles Hand Bell Choir. Preceded in death by her husband, Howard Nathan Martin and her son, Howard Wayne Martin. Survived by her daughters, Marylin Martin Sharp and husband, Douglas, of Houston, Ruth Martin Cain and her husband, John of Canyon Lake; grandsons, John Robert Martin of Hawaii, Christopher "Kit" Howard Martin of Carlsbad, CA and Matthew Martin Cain of Canyon Lake; sister, Mary Condrey McBryde and brother, William Bert Condrey and his wife, Jean. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at Waltrip Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at Fair Haven United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
