Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Fairfield Recorder newspaper April 05, 2008 edition John Alton Matchett Funeral services were held last week for John Alton, 80, of Grand Prairie who died Saturday, March 22, in Arlington. Mr. Matchett was born in Trinity county on Dec. 26, 1927. He attended school in Trinity before joining the United States Army and would later work for Texas Utilities (Big Brown) in Fairfield for 25 years. Mr. Matchett enjoyed cooking, fishing, and hunting and was devoted to his family. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 at Carlisle Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Goodson officiating. Interment followed at Carlisle Cemetery. Mr. Matchett is survived by son Gary Ray Matchett and wife Annette of Grand Prairie; grandchildren Justin amd Randi Matchett of Grand Prairie; and sister Dianne Tipton Walker and husband Glen of Austin. He is preceded in death by mother Lottie Elizabeth Dunaway Tipton; stepfather Eli Charles Tipton; sister Helen Marie Tipton McGee; nephew James Robert McGee; and niece Pamela Jean McGee. Charles Goodson officiating. Burial followed in the Carlisle Cemetery in Trinity County. Mr. Matchett died Friday, March 21, in Arlington. He was born Dec. 26, 1927, in the McGee Bend area of Trinity County and spent most of his childhood in Carlisle. He went to public school in Trinity and there joined the U.S. Army. He later retired from Texas Utilities (Big Brown) in Fairfield after 25 years. He had a passion for many things including cooking, fishing and hunting and was deeply devoted to his family. Survivors include a son and his spouse, Gary Ray and Annette Matchett of Grand Prairie; a sister, Dianne Tipton Walker and her husband Glen of Austin; a grandson, Justin; a granddaughter, Randi; and a number of nieces and nephews. Waller-Thornton Funeral Home directed the arrangements.
