Mayes (1816-Sep. 4, 1886, buried at Mayes Cemetery near Butler) The Fairfield Recorder - 10 September 1886 A Good Man Gone Died at the residence of Mrs. Gill in Oakwoods, Texas on Saturday, September 4, 1886, Mr. Thomas G. Mayes of this county, aged about 70. In the death of Mr. Mayes, Freestone looses one of her oldest citizens and representative men. The deceased came to this county some years before the war from Butler County, Alabama and settled near Butler where he had always lived. He was we believed the last of a number of old citizens, the Gills, the Mannings, the Mobleys and other all of whom moved from the same section of Alabama about the same time and also lived together in the Butler neighborhood. They were all men of property, intelligence and enterprise and for many years their section of the county was a prominent and important one in deaing with the county's affairs. The deceased was a high toned, honorable gentleman, a man of strict integrity and most exemple life. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and died a consistent Christian. His remains were brought to this county and interred in the Mayes burying ground near Butler. Peace to his ashes.
