Freestone County, Texas Obits Houston Chronicle newspaper - Tuesday 12/20/2005 edition MCCARTER VIRGINIA WILLIFORD McCARTER, 87, died on December 17, 2005. She was born on July 22, 1918 in Fairfield, Texas, where she graduated from high school. Virginia received her B.A. degree in Education in 1939 from Baylor University. Following graduation, she taught elementary school and was a high school basketball and volleyball coach for numerous small town Texas schools. In 1942, she moved to San Antonio to work for the war depot and to pursue a business education. Following WWII, she moved to Houston and worked as an executive secretary for various businesses and continued to work while raising her two small children. Virginia retired as a financial analyst in 1983 after working 12 years for H.U.D. Virginia was a past member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and was a member for the past 33 years at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, where she was active and held office in New Horizons Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. Due to her strong belief in education, she was active and held office in clubs that supported education and scholarships as a member of River Oaks Friendship Club, the Delphians, a past member of Geological Wives Auxiliary, Tri-city Investment Club and as a lifelong learner, numerous book review clubs. Preceded in death by her husband, Charles Embree McCarter; grandson, Jeffrey O'Connell; and brother, Richard Williford, she is survived by daughter, Linda Acton Butcher and husband Chuck; son, Howard Acton and wife Karen; grandchildren, Ryan O'Connell, Christopher Butcher, Elaine Tackett and husband Steve, and Catherine, Laura and Amanda Acton; and numerous cousins and other relatives. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 PM until 8 PM on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at The Settegast-Kopf Co. Funeral Directors. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 22, 2005 in the chapel of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay. Following a reception at the church, interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.
