Freestone County, Texas Obits Submitted by Charlene Beatty Beauchamp Odessa American Online - October 12, 1999 edition John Leonard McCoslin ODESSA -- "Uncle Leonard," as he is lovingly called by many, stepped into heaven October 11, 1999. He was preceded in death by his wife Willie, who died May 24, 1973; a stepson, Chester Slaughter who was killed in a plane crash, May 21, 1945; and his youngest son, Leslie McCoslin who died Nov. 8, 1997. After his marriage in 1926, he made his home in and around Freestone and Limestone County. He was a farmer by trade. He loved his family and church. He was very active in his church. He served as Sunday school director, Sunday school teacher, treasurer and was ordained as a Deacon in 1945. In July of 1984, he moved to California to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Leslie and Jeri McCoslin. He moved back to Texas in October 1998. He was a member of Dunn Street Baptist Church. He is survived by a step-son, W.B. "Buck" Slaughter of Santa Maria, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Jeri McCoslin of Fiddletown, Calif.; four grandchildren, Brian McCoslin, Cathy Gallentine, Ginger Taylor and Gene Slaughter; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Anita Miller of Baytown; two brothers, Denton McCoslin of Coupland and Leon McCoslin of Humble. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of Mr. McCoslin's life will be heId at Dunn Street Baptist Church, at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Mark Lewis officiating. The body will be transferred to Mexia where graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at New Hope Cemetery with Wayne Blackshear officiating.
