A. M. MILLER The Reaper, Death, who is busy all seasons of the year with his sickle, cutting down young and old alike, removed last week an old and well known resident of our town, Mrs. Armenda Miller, wife of Mr. A. M. Miller, one of the oldest citizens of Fairfield, who came to the country, back in the '50s before the Civil War. She had been ill a long time, but became suddenly worse on Thursday of last week, and died about 10 o'clock that night, August 24th. The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. Q. V. Shockley, who died here a few years ago, one of our most respected old citizens. She was born in Hall county, Georgia in 1839, and moved with her parents to Arkansas, where, at Arkadelphia, in October 1863, she was married to Mr. Miller, who was then in the Confederate service. The war being over, in May 1865, she came to Fairfield, and has resided here ever since. Mrs. Miller had been in bad health for a long time, so much so, that for eight or ten years she remained at home, practically unable to go out. Her death was due to a general breaking down of vital powers superinduced by the excessive heat of the season. Coming when it did, after disease had made her an invalid for many years, death was only a release from weary months of more or less suffering, and the open gateway to the joys of that better world where the soul of the good wife and mother has gone, to await the coming of loved ones left behind. The deceased was a member of the Methodist church, and had been for many years. She leaves behind to mourn her loss a husband and three children, all of whom are grown, besides a brother living here and two sisters in Navarro County. Her children all reside here, they being Messrs. W. H. and J. D. Miller, and Mrs. R. M. Edwards. Her remains were laid to rest about 6 o'clock last Friday evening in the Fairfield cemetery. Rev. J. W. Holt, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating, assisted by Rev. E. J. Brown. A goodly number of people attended the funeral and mingled their sorrow with that of the bereaved family, in grief at the first death that had come to break the family circle. The Recorder joins many friends of the family in the dark hour of their bereavement.
