Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Teague Chronicle - November 10, 2011 edition AUGUST "GUS" LEONARD MOORE Friends and colleagues of August "Gus" Leonard Moore, age 88, of Marble Falls, Texas, are invited to join in a Celebration of the life of A.L. "Gus" Moore, on Saturday, November 19, 2011, from 2 to 4:30 p.m., at the Marble Falls Senior Activity Center. Burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Teague, Texas. Gus was born in Teague, Texas, April 13, 1923 to Leonard Moore Sr., and Bessie Johnson-Moore. An educator, A. L. "Gus" Moore was recognized by the University Interscholastic League for "Exceptional Service" to the Interscholastic League Press Conference and to Scholastic Journalism in Texas, in 1976. After retiring in 1986 from Madison High School in San Antonio's Northeast ISD, he continued with efforts on behalf of literacy and children until his death. He was a current member of the Burnet County Child Welfare Board and a former member of the Marble Falls ISD School Board. He also served for four years on the Marble Falls Career and Technology Advisory Council. He worked tirelessly to help get the elementary school built in Spicewood, TX, and helped founding the Spicewood Library. He was a State and Local member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association. Gus was involved in many civic activities. A member of the International Association of Lions Clubs, he served as President of the Lions Club of North Central San Antonio, in 1970-71 and as President of the Marble Falls Noon Lions Club in 1992-93 and as "Tail Twister" in 1995-96. He was dedicated for many years to the Lions Scholarship Selection Committee which grants scholarships to graduating Seniors in the Marble Falls area. In recognition, the Lions highest honor, the "Melvin Jones Fellow" was presented to August Moore in 2006-2007 for "Dedicated Humanitarian Services" by the Lions Club International Foundation, and in 2010-2011 he received the Extraordinary Service Award. For decades, Gus served as a lay reader for various churches in Austin, San Antonio, and Marble Falls. Until recently, he was responsible for the training and coordinating the service of lay readers at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Marble Falls. While actively R.V.ing, he served as National Chaplain for the Holiday Ramblers Club. A proud World War II veteran, Gus served his country in the European campaign with the Army, Company B, 318th Infantry Division under the command of General George Patton. At the time of his death he was serving as a Trustee for the VFW Post 6974, District 14 (Burnet) and was a life member of The American Legion Post 0437. Working with the support of the Marble Falls Noon Lions Club to create the Marble Falls Senior Activity Center, Gus and Minnie Moore served on the founding committee with two other couples, raising the necessary funds and securing the land, which was donated by the Marble Falls National Bank, for the Center's site. Gus was the Center's first President in 1987-88, coming back as Vice-President in 2006-07, and 2007-08, and served again as President in 2008-09. Gus passed peacefully away from this life on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in the ICU at Seton Medical Center Williamson, in Round Rock, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 59 years, Minnie Nelson Moore. He is survived by his first wife, Bess Ferlet, mother of his only child, daughter Lynn Oliver-Laurinavicius and her husband Rommey, of Lakehills, Texas, plus a host of lifetime friends and former students.
