Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Fairfield Recorder newspaper April 16, 2009 Roy Lee Nichols Memorial services will be held this Saturday for Roy Lee Nichols, 73, of Teague who died Tuesday, April 7. Mr. Nichols was born in Amarillo on June 12, 1935 to William and Esther Nichols. After graduating from high school, he played minor league baseball for the Fort Worth Cats. Mr. Nichols later joined the United States Navy and served in both Korea and Vietnam. After 20 years of military service, he retired and began working for Mitchell Energy. In 1995, Mr. Nichols again retired and created Barb R Quarter Horses which he operated with his wife Barbara. The couple raised, bred and showed registered quarter horses for several years. Mr. Nichols also owned The Wooden Nickel, an antique business where he spent many hours refinishing and repairing antique pieces. He was also a member of the Hubbard Masonic Lodge. Mr. Nichols was an avid golfer and fisherman who enjoyed deep-sea and surf fishing and spending time with his dogs, Ben and Sera. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Fairfield with Rev. Don Suits officiating. Mr. Nichols body was cremated. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Nichols of Teague; sons, Karl Nichols and wife Suzanne of Hubbard; stepson, Mike Perry of Waco; stepdaughter, Dana Frazier and husband Tony of Mart; brother, Ray Nichols of Van Buren, Arkansas; grandchildren, Heather Nichols of Hubbard, Ian Nichols of Tom River, New Jersey, Justin, Lindsay, John and Jamie Riley, all of Mart, Leigh Ann Grote of Riesel and Jeremy Riley of Itasca. Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his parents, William and Esther Nichols; brother, Bill Nichols of Hubbard; and daughter, Sue Ellen Nichols of Tom River, New Jersey. Arrangements were made under the direction of Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Fairfield.
