Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Fairfield Recorder - Thursday, June 28, 1934 Page: 1 Calvin Orand Dies From Strychnine Taken Through Mistake Calvin Orand, aged 26, (died at the home of his father, A. M, Orand, one mile northwest of Fairfield, about 6 o'clock Monday evening from the effects of strychnine taken through mistake for quinine. It is reported that Calvin had been ill with malaria, and filled a capsule with what he thought was quinine, failing to read the label on the container. Local doctors rushed to his assistance, but were unable to aid him and he died within about thirty minutes after taking the poison. Calvin was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Orand, and besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Leland and Ellis. He was a quiet, steady, industrious young man, respected by all who knew him. Burial was in the Ward Prairie cemetery Tuesday afternoon, the Revs. McKissack and Condrey conducting services.
