Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Obituary of Nancy Ann (Sessums) Owens (Jul. 6, 1863 to Jun. 2, 1947) Odessa American newspaper (of Odessa, TX) - Tuesday, June 3, 1947 issue MRS. OWENS DIES HERE MONDAY Mrs. Nancy A. Owens , 84, widow of the late T. F. Owens and mother of two Odessa businessmen, J. T. & Charley H. Owens, died at 5:35 a.m. Monday, at the home of her son, Charley, 1917 N. Sam Houston. Mrs. Owens , a native of Meridian, Miss., came to Odessa 10 months ago. Her health had been failing for more than a month. Born Nancy Sessums July 6, 1863. She came to Texas with her parents as a child and was married in Freestone Co., Feb. 2,1881 to Thomas Frederick Owens, who died in 1930. Tributes have appeared widely in Texas papers commending the "pioneer mother", who experienced the hardships of early farm life in sparsely settled Texas. Nine of the twelve children born to the couple survive, they are: C.H. Owens of Owens-Young Appliance, Odessa; J.T.Owens, long time Phillips Consignee, Odessa; T.F. Owens, Obar, N.M.; Mrs. W.W.Hatter, Red Spring; Mrs. Anna Sims, Corpus Christi, Mrs. Lue Sammons, Shamrock; Mrs. Alice Hogg, Odessa, Mrs. W.B. Hogg, Dallas; Mrs.Lem Waggoner of Glendale, Ariz.; two brothers, W.J. Sessums of Marlow, Okla., & T.R. Sessums, Tishomingo, Okla.; and three sisters, Mrs. Eva Goodwin, Bell, Calf., Mrs Jay Freeman and Mrs.Lillie Baxter of Duncan, Okla. survive. There are 38 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Arthur DeLoach, pastor, assisted by Rev. W. C. Harrison, pastor of Belmont Baptist Church. Fred Gage and Frank Cochran will arrange music. Pallbearers are: Slav Machotka, Jim McGowan, Joe Hamilton, Walter Walsh, Joe Rice, and Joe Ruehs.
