Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Fairfield Recorder April 2007 Car wreck claims Teague high coed A 1-vehicle wreck on a Freestone county road Saturday afternoon claimed the life of a Teague high school student. The wreck occurred at 1:43 p.m. on CR 930 near Teague. Killed was Jessica Yanet Perez, 15, who was the driver of a 2004 Dodge Neon sedan owned by Juan Montano of Teague. A passenger in the car, Maria Guadalupe Hernandez, 15, of Teague sustained injuries in the wreck. Department of Public Safety Trooper Michael Adams reports the two girls, neither of whom were licensed to drive, were returning from a grocery store in Mexia. The vehicle was eastbound on CR 930 at an unsafe speed when it started weaving erractically, ran off the road on the left and struck a tree almost head-on, uprooting the tree, Adams says. The vehicle then spun a quarter turn to the right and caught on fire, but Miss Hernandez was able to get safely out of the car, the trooper reports. Miss Perez was pronounced dead at the scene by Peace Justice Theresa Farris, precinct one, and Miss Hernandez was taken by ambulance to Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia, then transferred to another hospital for treatment. Adams reports that Miss Hernandez stated that horseplay may have been a contributing factor to the wreck. Student Yessica Yanet Perez "The kids have drawn together and are getting support from their friends and family. It’s hard but they’ll over come this – they’re very resilient," said Teague High School Principal Darrell Evans, about the tragic loss of the school’s fourth student this school year. Fifteen-year old freshman Yessica Yanet Perez was tragically killed in a one- car accident Saturday afternoon, April 21st, on FCR 930 approximately 7.3 miles west of Teague. Fellow freshman student Maria Hernandez, also 15, was injured in the accident and was reportedly at home Monday with injuries to an arm and leg that may require surgery. According to D.P.S. reports, Perez was driving a 2004 maroon Dodge Neon eastbound on FCR 930 at an unsafe speed when the accident occurred at 1:45 p.m. Reports indicated that Perez had started steering erratically back and forth, "horse-playing with the passenger", when she lost control of the vehicle, left the road to the left, and struck a tree. The reports goes on to say that the vehicle made a one-quarter turn to the right after the impact, caught on fire, and came to rest next to the tree. Miss Hernandez, who was a passenger in the front seat, was able to exit the vehicle before being burned. She was taken to Parkview Hospital in Mexia by the Mexia EMS. Miss Perez was not as lucky and was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Teresa Farris. Both Perez and Hernandez were wearing seat belts, but neither had a driver’s license, according to the Department of Public Safety. The vehicle driven by Perez was owned by Juan Montano of Teague. The accident was investigated by D.P.S. Trooper Michael Adams. Teague High School Principal Darrell Evans said that counselor’s from the Regional 12 Service Center were at school Monday to help students deal with the loss of another one of their classmates. "Yessica was a very reserve young lady who never got into any trouble," said Evans. "Her friends and family were very important to her. She was real sweet and she was a member of our family here at the school, we cared an awful lot about her." Out of respect for Miss Perez and her family, Teague High School was scheduled to dismiss at 12 noon on Wednesday so classmates and faculty members could attend the funeral at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mexia. Interment was set to follow the service at Mexia Cemetery. She was a Teague high school freshman and a member of the FCCLA. She enjoyed dancing, talking on the telephone, and spending time with her friends. She attended Mass regularly at both St. Mary's Catholic Church in Teague and in Mexia. Services were conducted at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, and burial followed at Mexia Cemetery.
