Freestone County, Texas Obituaries VERNON PILLANS 2011-06-30 / Obituaries Funeral services were held Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church in the Winkler/ St. Elmo Community for Mrs. Vernon Pillans, 86, of Freestone county who died June 26 with family at her side. Interment followed at Saint Elmo Cemetery. She was born February 16, 1925 in Corsicana to R.M. Hodge and Beulah Blanch Sikes Hodge. She attended school at Oak Valley and later graduated from Emhouse in 1942. After graduation and while living in Corsicana, she worked for Western Union, P and S Hospital and Duke and Ayers. In later years, she worked for Texas Miller Hat Factory of Corsicana, Lyle Oil Company of Fairfield and The Smokehouse in Streetman. Mrs. Pillans was a lifelong member of New Hope Baptist Church of Winkler; member of The Silver Haired Legislature; and a 50-year member and Past Worthy Matron of the Corsicana Eastern Star #118. For many years, she and her husband Robert were very active in Freestone county politics. She enjoyed life, her church, family, friends, politics and cooking. Mrs. Pillans was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and granddaughter Laurie Pillans Horn. She is survived by children Gary Pillans and wife Carolyn Pillans of Corsicana, Bud Minze and wife Sherrill of Streetman, Benny Pillans and wife Cheryl of Winkler and David Fondren and wife Bobbie of Frisco; Grandchildren Cindy Pair and Brian and Danielle Pillans of Corsicana, Erich and Stephanie Minze of Fairfield, Adam and Linda Minze of Plattsmouth, NB, Mindy and Rodney Kujawa of Crossroads, Cherrilyn and Jay Robertson of Fairfield, Robby and Selene Pillans of Corsicana, Jay and Anne Fondren of Robinson, Clay and Katie Snider of Allen and Jobeth Fondren of Frisco; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great- grandchildren; Sisters-in-law Frances Pillans of Streetman and Joyce Pillans of Winkler; brothers and their wives James and Dorothy Hodge of Corsicana and Richard “Butch” and Jeanie Hodge of Wooster, AR; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Pallbearers were Preston Bonner, Conrad Engelholm, Larry Travis, Clell Young, Joey Satagaj, James Gary Pillans, Phil Pillans and Corky Hagler. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons Brian Pillans, Jay Fondren, Eric Minze, Adam Minze and Robby Pillans. Officiating services was Ken Helton. Making arrangements was Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home of Corsicana.
