Freestone County, Texas Obituaries/Death Notices [Research of Linda Mullin] The Fairfield Recorder - Friday, August 15, 1913 Page: 5 Entered Into Rest One by one the pioneers of our town are passing away. Wednesday was laid to rest Mrs. J. T. Powell, who has spent a long life in Fairfield and who, with her family, are closely identified with the history of this town. Mrs. Powell died at 10 o'clock, Tuesday night, Aug 12, 1913, of the infirmities of age. Her death was not unexpected, yet it threw quite a gloom over all in consequence of her prominence. Mrs. Powell was formerly Miss Cynthia Herndon, and was born at Galatin, Tenn., in 1840, moved to Kentucky when quite small. When 12 years old she moved with her parents to Texas locating in Old Springfield, where in 1860 she was married to J. T. Powell, and in 1869 moved to Fairfield where she spent the remainder of her life. All of her daughters have been with her for nearly a week her death being expected. They are Mrs. Sue Gamewell and Mrs. Addie Dunn, of Teague; Mrs. Mamie Winborn, of Denison, and Misses Mattie and Fannie Powell, of Fairfield. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mitchell, of Franklin, and Miss Sallie Herndon, of this place. The sympathy of many friends is with the sorely bereaved family, but words are but poor things to offer in consolation for the loss of a mother, the center and sun of a home, but the memory of her long and well spent life, of her upright character and her devotion to her children, is their best earthly comfort. May the thought, though their mother is no more with them, yet the protecting power of an all-wise Father is over them and looking to Him, may time bring healing on its wings. ONE WHO LOVED HER
