SHIELDS On June 1st, God in His wisdom saw fit to take from us one we so dearly loved, although God knows and does everything for the best. But it was hard to know that it was for the best, altho (sic) he had suffered five long month[s] of illness. He was willing and ready to go. God saw fit to call him at 8:30 Monday morning, June 1st. H. P. Shields was born in Missouri October 8, 1862. He came with his parents in 1864 and had been a resident of Freestone County for about 66 years. He was married to Ophelia Cockerell January l883. To this union was born two children, Clark Shields and Mrs. Lillie Richardson. He was a kind husband and father. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and two children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. On Tuesday, June 2, as the sun was slowly sinking in the golden west, a number of relatives and friends were gathered at the lonely old spot to pay their last respects as his body was laid to rest in the Rehoboth cemetery. And how our hearts ached as they sang the last farewell song and as we looked upon the flowered covered mound. ... To fill his last wish and request, the Rev. J. N. Vincent held the funeral service.
