He went to Wortham sixty-one years ago from Mount Carmel, Miss., where he was born. ========================================== William Smith Passes at 97 WORTHAM, Texas, March 15 (Special) - William Smith, who was ninety-seven old last Oct. 26, died at his Wortham home Sunday. Smith was born in Mount Olive, Miss., and came to Wortham sixty-four years ago. He was the oldest known resident of Freestone County. He was a retired farmer and landowner, and an active member of the Prebyterian Church until recent years. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. V. Bounds; three sons, O.C. Smith, Wade Smith and Billie Smith, all of Wortham; fifteen grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. Funeral rites were in the home of his daughter Monday, the Rev. A. W. McDeguire of Mexia officiating. ========================================== Last Rites for William Smith, 97, At Wortham Monday Pioneer Citizen Moved to Present Home 65 Years Ago Last Rites for William Smith, 97 years of age, were from the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. V. Bounds, in Wortham on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Rev. A. W. McDeguire officiated. Interment was in the Wortham City Cemetery, with the Corley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were: Gary Finch, Cleovis Smith, Alton Smith, Elliott Smith, William Bryson, and Thurman Kerr. Survivors include three sons, O.C. Smith, W. E. Smith and Wade Smith, all of Wortham; one daughter, Mrs. J. V. Bounds of Wortham; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith, who died at his daughter's home in Wortham on Sunday, was one of the oldest pioneers in this section. He moved to Wortham with his family 65 years ago. He was born at Mt. Olive, Mississippi on October 29, 1850. He was a life long member of the Presbyterian Church. ========================================== Pioneer Wortham Resident Buried WORTHAM, March 15 - (Spl.) - William Smith, 97, a Wortham resident 65 years, died at his home here Sunday. Funeral survices were held here Monday afternoon with burial in the Wortham cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. A. W. Deguire of Mexia. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. J.V. Bounds, Wortham; three sons, O.C., W.E., and Wade Smith, all of Wortham. 12 grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.
