Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Bryan - College Station Eagle December 13, 2001 Raymond ‘Pete’ Smith Aug. 6, 1918 — Dec. 11, 2001 BEDIAS — Services for Raymond “Pete” Smith, 83, of Bedias are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Baptist Church of Bedias and burial will be in the Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston at 2 p.m. The Rev. Jerald Brown of the Bedias Baptist Church will officiate. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Bedias. Mr. Smith died Tuesday. He was born in Wortham and was a member of the Bedias Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a sharpshooter for the U.S. Army 18th Cavalry Recon Squad during the invasion of Normandy and Northern France. He received the Victory Medal, Purple Heart, American Theater Medal and two Bronze Stars. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Smith. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Diana Smith and Lonnie and Steveann Smith, all of Carrollton, Texas; two daughters, Carolyn Cherry of Pasadena and Brenda Smith of Bedias; a brother and sister-in-law, M.G. Gerald and Nancy Smith of Houston; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
