Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Fairfield Recorder newspaper April 2, 1886 edition "DIED Mr. J. W. Steen, an old and respected citizen of our county died last Saturday, the 27t ult. at his residence on Ward Prairie, aobut eight miles north of Fairfield. Mr. Steen had been a resident of the county some sixteen or eighteen years, having come here soon after the war from north Mississippi. He was one of our most energetic and industrious citizens, an intelligent man and a successful farmer. He was a man of stict personal integrity, and had many friends. The deceased we think, was nearly 70 years old, and until a few years ago was quite active and vigorous for one of his age. He was ill only about a week or ten days. His remains were interred last Sunday in Lake Chapel cemetery, and were followed to the grave by a number of sorrowing friends. He leaves an aged wife and a number of children to mourn the loss of husband, father and truest friend. Peace to his ashes."
