Amarillo Globe-News http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm Elsewhere Randall Stroud CANTON - Randall Stroud, 81, of Amarillo died Sunday, March 9, 2003. Services were on Thursday, March 13, in Eubank Chapel with Dr. Bill Thomas officiating. Special eulogies were by Jerry Stroud, Sharon Fugate, Lavelda Grier and Cindy Anderson. Burial was in Haven of Memories Memorial Park. Mr. Stroud was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Ben Wheeler. He graduated from Wills Point High School and attended the University of Texas. He worked for 38 years in plants in Trinidad, Bonham and Fairfield for Texas Utilities. He volunteered for the Senior Citizen Center and was active in area churches. Mr. Stroud served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of Raleigh Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He was aboard the ship, Raleigh, which was the first ship struck by Japanese attackers. Aware the foward generator had been knocked out by the torpedo, he rushed below decks and, by himself, got the aft generators operating so the guns could be fired. Raleigh was credited with shooting down four enemy planes and destroying a mini-sub. Mr. Stroud enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching Cowboy and university football games. He moved to Craig Retirement Community in Amarillo and joined St. Paul United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Hazel, were married 58 years. Survivors include his wife; a son, David Stroud and wife, Terrie, of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Erin Nuss of Arlington, a student at University of Texas; a sister, Iola Rorex and husband, Clarence, of Blessing; two sisters-in-law, Dortha Stroud of Greenville and Georgia Stroud of Houston; two brothers-in-law, Troy Roberts and wife, Lois, and T.L. "Soupie" and wife, Marcelle, all of Wills Point; and other survivors include, Eva-Nell Miller, James Fugate, Marlene Miller, Mary Lou Wolfe, Robert Wolfe, Leland Stroud, Jeroline Cerny, Emillia Fischer and Gayle Atto.
