Mexia Daily News - Dec. 21, 2005 edition Longtime Educator Leo Stuver, 88, dies Leo C. Stuver, 88, of Tehuacana, died Wednesday morning in Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services for the longtime Texas Public Schools educator, are scheduled for Thursday afternoon, Dec. 22, 2005, at 3 o’clock in First United Methodist Church of Tehuacana. Officiating will be the Rev. Brad Brittian and Dr. Max Burkhead. Burial will be in Tehuacana Cemetery. Visitation with the family is scheduled for this evening from 5 until 7 o’clock at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Mr. Stuver is survived by his wife, Jeffalene Stuver of Tehuacana; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Pam Stuver of Teague; grandchildren - Kip Stuver and wife Heather of Tehuacana, Kerry Stuver and wife Kristy of Wortham, and Jill Stuver of Waco; great-grandchildren - Addison Stuver, Reagan Stuver and Kenlie Stuver. Other survivors are several cousins, and a niece, Debbie Duffy of McDonough, Georgia. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Kipling Stuver. Leo was a 1936 graduate of Mexia High School, where he played football for the Black Cats’ state playoff team in 1935. He was an outstanding lineman on that team. He also played football for Westminster College in Tehuacana, and earned a football scholarship to Sam Houston State University, graduating there in 1940, and claimed a Master’s degree in 1946 from Sam Houston State. Always active in civic endeavors and clubs, Mr. Stuver was a member of the Lions Club, Rotary International, the Masons of Texas, Karem Shrine, was former Chairman of the board of directors of the Greater Lewisville Chamber of Commerce, and also chaired the United Fund in that city. He also held memberships in Texas State Teachers Association, the AASA and the Texas Association of School Administrators. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mexia. His last place of service as a Texas school Educator came at Lewisville, where he was Superintendent from 1969 until 1981. His schools’ career began as Dodge ISD Superintendent in 1940-41 at the age of 22. He was Superintendent in 1942 at the Bobville ISD in Dobbin; was principal in 1943 in the Rusk ISD, in 1944-46 was with Superior Oil, held principal positions at Magnolia ISD from 1946 to 1950, and in Angleton from 1950-1953. He was Teague ISD Superintendent from 1953 to 1966 and held the same position from 1966 to 1969 with the Hillsboro ISD. Numerous honors came Leo’s way, including an Honorary Life Membership with the Texas Association of School Administrators; a 50-year Lifetime Member of the Masons of Texas; was proclaimed Educator of the Month by Texas School Business Magazine; was honored by the Lewisville School District’s naming a new 1,500-seat auditorium serving the district, the Leo C. Stuver Auditorium, in 1978. Mr. Stuver was honored with a commendation by the State Board of Education, in recognition of 41 years of distinguished service to Education, upon his retirement in 1981. Pallbearers are Tom Collins, Rody Durham, Max Goldsmith, Jimmy Lawrence, Bobby Moore Fred Neale, Ken Trotter and Larry Watts. Honorary pallbearers are Frank Amick, Clayton Downing, Bob Fain, Raymond Fessler, Dick Lawrence, Virginia Marshall, Eugene Sims, Jim Sumerlin, Bob Vordlander, Neal Wilson and Marshall Durham. Memorials may be made to Mexia Providence Hospice, Mexia Academic Sweater Fund, or Teague Ex-Student Association Memorial Scholarship Fund.
