Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Fairfield Recorder newspaper - December 18, 2008 edition Lurline (Carroll) Sweeney Funeral services were held earlier this month for Lurline Carroll Sweeney, 81, of Butler who died Saturday, Nov. 29, at East Texas Medical Center in Fairfield. Mrs. Carroll was born in Teague on May 19, 1927, to Green and Callie Stratford- Carroll. As a child, Mrs. Sweeney's family moved from Teague to the Post Oak Community. She graduated from Furney Richardson high school in Teague and attended Prairie View A&M University where she earned her bachelors and masters degrees. She married James Ervin Sweeney on Dec. 24, 1947. They lived in Post Oak until they purchased land in Butler in 1955. Mrs. Sweeney was a teacher for 39 years in Avant, Butler and Fairfield. She also taught adult education in Butler until she retired. She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association, TSTA, as well as the alumni associations of Butler and Furney Richardson. Mrs. Sweeney was an active member of Post Oak Church, participating in choir and serving as church secretary. She was chairperson of the Pastor's Aide and Pastor's Appreciation committee. Services were held at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the First Baptist Church in Fairfield with Revs. Carlos and Michael Daniels officiating. Giving the eulogy were Rev. Sammy McGuire of New Zion Baptist Church with Rev. R.C. Emanuel providing support. Interment followed at New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Post Oak with Herbert Finnen, Hoover Charles Carroll, Anthony Ray Slaughter, Green Carroll, Jr., Nelson Slaughter III, Jerrell Carroll, Wayne Carroll and Bruce Brown serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers included Mrs. Sweeney's grandsons: Gary, Ray, Jermaine, James, Christopher, Chase, Waldo, Dexter, Christopher Earvin, Michael and Warren. Mrs. Sweeney is survived by her daughter, Cecelia Sweeney (JoAnn) of Fairfield; sons, Christopher Sweeney (Nanette) of Spring; Ray Sweeney (Colitha) of Ft. Worth and John Douglas Sweeney (Aurelia) of Victorville, California; 20 grandchildren, Ray, Jermaine, James, Christopher, Chase, Lauren, Sherique, Waldo, Dexter, Christopher Earvin, Michael, Warren, Natalie, Sherita, Gary; And 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Emma Finnen of Austin, Irene Slaughter of Fairfield, and Betty Brown (Sullivan, Sr.) of Serven, Maryland; and brothers, Hillman Renfro (Jakie) of Dallas, Green Carroll of Longview, and W.C. Carroll of Houston. She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James Ervin Sweeney; her parents, Green (Munsey) and Callie Stratford-Carroll; son, Warren Ervin Sweeney; and brothers, Herbert Hoover Carroll and Billy Joe Carroll.
