Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Fairfield Recorder newspaper March 12, 2009 Cornelius Titus Funeral services were held last week for Cornelius Titus, 85, of Los Angeles, California who died Friday, Feb. 13, of a heart attack. Mr. Titus was born on June 16, 1923, the second of six children to Governor and Amanda Marie Titus. His paternal grandparents were Willie and Mary Bell Rauls Titus and his maternal grandparents were Rev. Eldridge, Sr. and Catherine Abney Hunter. Mr. Titus' maternal great-grandparents were Edward "Ned" and Clora Dunbar Titus. The couple was instrumental in the establishment of Titus Farm, now known as Browns Creek. His great-great-grandparents were freed slaves who began establishing communities in Freestone county during the reconstruction period following the Civil War. He was raised in the Titus Farm Community where he attended Hope Well Methodist Church and Dogan high school. Mr. Titus graduated from DHS in 1942 and moved to Camp Wolters in Mineral Wells. He was employed there for two years before moving to Los Angeles, California with his wife, Inez Love Titus. In California he was employed as a welder with a steel casting company and was later promoted to supervisor. He retired from the company after 40 years of service. Mr. Titus was an active member of Cornerstone Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. Services were held Friday, Feb. 27, at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Titus is survived by his live-in companion, Ann Broussard; Mrs. Broussard's son, Robert Moten; Mrs. Broussard's daughter, Stacy Moten; and Mrs. Broussard's grandson, Christopher Tompkins; son, Leondre Davis; brother, Wilbur "Bill" Titus of Fairfield; sister, Loreta Yvonne Phillips of Dallas; and sister-inlaw, Bettye L. Titus of San Diego, California. He is preceded in death by wife, Inez Hunter Titus; brother, Joe Pierce; sisters, Catherine Titus Cox and Dorothy Earnestine Titus Jordan; and stepson, Boyce. Funeral arrangements were made by Angelus Funeral Home of Los Angeles, California.
