Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Willis D. Wardwell Funeral services for Mr. Willis D. Wardwell, 65, were held on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Chaplain Merry Wilburn of Providence Hospice officiated. Interment followed the services at Salem Cemetery near Freestone with U.S.A.F. Honors. Visitation was on Friday with the family present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Wardwell passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at his residence near Teague. He was born in Teague on October 10, 1947, but moved to Hillsboro where he spent most of his childhood. His family moved to Stanford, TX while he was in school and he graduated from Stanford High School with the Class of 1964. He enjoyed sports and was a member of a boxing club in Hillsboro and played football and baseball in high school at Stanford. Mr. Wardwell enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966 and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1969, but re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served until retiring in 1991. He married Dorothy on March 10, 1984, and shared over twenty-nine years together until being separated by his death. After retiring from the air force, Mr. Wardwell purchased a motor home and traveled the country with his wife. He returned to Teague in 1996 where he remained. Mr. Wardwell was a great cook and loved cooking BBQ and watching people eat his food. He enjoyed helping people and was good at fixing things. Mr. Wardwell was a lifelong member of D.A.V. and a Baptist by faith. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lee Price Wardwell of Teague; two sons, Toby Wardwell & wife Casie of Wichita Falls, and Bryan Wardwell & wife Misty of Oklahoma City, OK; two step-sons, Len Baty of Memphis, TN, and Scott Baty of Houston; four grandchildren, Patricia Alexis Wardwell, Brayden Shane Wardwell, Alissa Cheree Wardwell, and Bailey Wardwell; three step-grandchildren, Brenna, Taylor, and Chelsea; three brothers, Lawrence Wardwell & wife Sherry of Denver, Colorado, Kenneth Scott Wardwell & wife Lisa of Sherman, and Clarence Wardwell & wife Lynda of Abilene; two sisters, Laura Cole & husband Corkey of Waco, and Charlotte Myher & husband Bobby of Robinson; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Wardwell was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert & Ludie May Wardwell; and one sister, Margie Sue Stearns. Bowers Funeral Home of Teague, Texas conducted funeral arrangements.
