Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Fairfield Recorder - Feb. 11, 1887 issue DIED- At his residence, eight miles east of Fairfield, on Tuesday morning, February 8th, 1887, of pneumonia, Mr. Samuel G. Wells, aged about 73. Mr. Wells, like a good many of our old pioneer citizens, came to Texas from Tennessee. He became a citizen of the State about 40 years ago, settling first in Eastern Texas. In early life he was an energetic stirring man and took an active part in the busy scenes incident to the early settlement of the State. He was a citizen of Anderson County, when it was organized, and was elected its first Sheriff. Mr. Wells was a man of considerable information, and was well liked by his neighbors. He had been a resident of the county for many years, having moved here, we think, before the war. He was well known to many of our oldest citizens, who will regret to her of his death.
