(Herschel) West, Jr. U.S. Veteran Funeral services for Mr. Herschel West were held Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Bowers Funeral Home. Interment followed the service at Greenwood Cemetery. Rev. Richard Gillet officiated. Mr. West was born February 22, 1925 in Teague and passed away March 24, 2007 at the V.A. Hospital in Temple. Herschel was well liked by everyone. His children loved him and thought he was the “Greatest Father” on earth. In later years he liked to refer to himself as the “Cherokee Kid” and the “Texas Trader”. Anyone who knew Herschel knew that he was the “Garage Sale King!” In his younger years, he entered the Mr. Texas contest in Dallas and won second place. He served in the United States Navy from July 17, 1943 until March of 1946. He was assigned to a ship out of Norfolk Virginia during WWII. He was a radio operator and a Golden Globe Boxer while in the Navy. After his discharge he went to work for the BRI Railroad as a telegraph operator and was employed there from 1946-1966. Pallbearers for the service are; Christopher West McAllister, Herschel Lee West, David Clinton West, Tiger, Jacobs, Darel Jacobs, Tommy Thomas II & Lewis Paul West, Jr. Honorary Pallbearer will be Michael Daniels. He is survived by his children; Lee West & wife Joanna of Teague, Terry Lynn Jacobs & husband Dwayne of Houston, Lewis Paul West Sr. & wife Kathy of Teague & Lori Daniels & husband Doug of Fairfield. One brother, Everett (Heavey) West of Teague & grandchildren; Christopher West McAllister, Herschel Lee West, David Clinton West, Tiger Jacobs, LaTecia Edgerton, Leslie Rogers, Darel Jacobs, Tommy Thomas II, Brandi Daniels, Michael Daniels, Monica Daniels, Lewis Paul West Jr., Crystal West, Lisa West, Ashley Waters & fourteen great-grandchildren. Long time family friend, Evelyn Hermis of Bedias. Mr. West is preceded in death by one son, Larry West; his mother & father, Lydia & C. H. West Sr.; & step-father, J.I. Mr. West was preceded in death by his son Larry West, his parents Lydia and C.H. West, Sr., his stepfather J.I. Willingham, his sister Anita Moore and his daughter-in-law Anita West.
