Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Fairfield Recorder - February 10, 2011 MODENE LONG WEST Funeral services were held Monday at the First Baptist Church in New Iberia, LA for Modene L. West, 91, formerly of east Texas who died Saturday, Feb. 5 in New Iberia. Interment followed on Tuesday at Union Cemetery in Teague. Mrs. West was born Nov. 30, 1919 in east Texas, the youngest of nine children born to Oscar and Cora Arrant Long. She was an educator for 42 years, beginning in a one room schoolhouse in Red Branch in 1939 where she and the district superintendent would cook breakfast for the children on some mornings. After moving to New Iberia with her husband, Avon, where he worked in the local oilfield industry, she began teaching at Delcambre Elementary. From there she moved to Hopkins St. Elem. in 1954 where she spent many years teaching third grade until 1967. Mrs. West spent her last years in the public schools at Center St. Elem. and retired in 1978. In October of 1978 she returned to her chosen profession at Catholic High School, teaching 5th grade until 1985. Mrs. West was an active member of First Baptist Church for over 60 years and a faithful member of the Winsome Sunday School Class. She gave many years to the Joy Senior Ministry coordinating their activities and meetings. Always active with other groups, she was a past president of the Acadiana Homemakers Club and a member of the national, state and parish Teachers’ Associations. Mrs. West derived great joy in all aspects of homemaking. She kept a perfect house and tended a garden from which she delighted in preparing meals for family and friends. Also an excellent seamstress, she made many garments for herself, her daughter, and granddaughter. Mrs. West was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years in 1993; her parents; and eight siblings, Coral Bell Long Lacey, Baxter Long, Ernest Long, Aron Long, Lillie Lee Wilson, Mary Long, Irene Long Wilson, and Q.V. Long. She is survived by daughter Catherine West Jackson and husband Kerry L. of New Iberia, LA and granddaughter Hilary Claire Jackson of Lafayette, LA. Survivors in Texas include nieces and nephews Joe Max Wilson, Billy Wilson, Robert Lacey, Mike Wilson, Linda Harrmann, Brenda Plemons, Agnes Dean Gary, Lee Roy West, Gen Dal West, Waundene Blue, Reba Nell Howard, and Steve Johnston. Officiating services were the Rev. Ed. Downs and Scott Bullock. Making arrangements was Pellerin Funeral Home of New Iberia, LA.
