Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Fairfield Recorder - October 8, 2009 edition Funeral held for retired FISD head Aaron David Whitaker, Jr. Funeral services were held Friday for retired Fairfield Independent School District superintendent Aaron David Whitaker, Jr., who died Tuesday, Sept. 22. Mr. Whitaker, 76, served as FISD superintendent from July 1983 to December 1990, during which time the junior high school campus was built. He was born Dec. 7, 1932 in Kemp, graduated Kemp high school in 1950 and graduated Henderson County Junior College and East Texas State University, earning a master's degree. Over more than 30 years in education, Mr. Whitaker began teaching in Talco, moved to Forney where he held the positions of elementary, junior high and senior high principal, and assistant superintendent, and served as superintendent of Canton ISD before moving to Fairfield. The retired school superintendent was a member of Rotary International, Lions Club and Texas State Teachers Association, and was a Mason. He also taught Sunday school and was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Fairfield. Mr. Whitaker enjoyed square dancing, camping, hunting, fishing and staying up late watching television with his granddaughters, and playing dominoes with Harold Massey and Johnny McLeod. Services were conducted at 10 a.m. at FBC with the Rev. Terry Skinner and Rev. Ken Pruitt officiating. Burial was at Kemp Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Miller, Barry Capps, Bob Pearson, Dickie Hill, David Lott and Dennis Isaacs. Mr. Whitaker is survived by his wife, Betty; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Sarah Whitaker of Terrell; a sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Ron Speed of Malakoff; a brother, James Whitaker of Mabank; two grandchildren, Ashlee of Dallas and Jessica of Terrell; a dear friend, John Miller; and numerous other relatives. Arrangements were made by Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home of Fairfield.
