Freestone County, Texas Obituaries ( Nov. 8, 1911-Aug. 15, 2002) Charles Mervil Wood Services for Charles Mervil Wood, 90, of Fairfield, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Fairfield with the Revs. Wayne Flowers and Mark Woodward officiating. Burial will follow in Fairfield Cemetery under the direction of Capps Memorial Chapel in Fairfield. Mr. Wood died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at East Texas Medical Center in Fairfield. He was born Nov. 8, 1911, in Butler. Mr. Wood lived in Fairfield most of his life. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1929 and was the recipient of the Lon Morris tennis scholarship. He graduated from Sam Houston with a B.S., and the University of Houston with a Master of Education. Mr. Wood was a teacher at St. Elmo and Shanks schools. He was elementary school principal in Kirbyville; and coach, principal and superintendent at Fairfield for a total of 19 years. He was a Mason and a member and past president of the Fairfield Rotary Club. He also served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Wood was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he taught men’s Bible class. He is survived by his wife, Mae Catherine Wood of Fairfield; daughter, Cathy Wood Lutes of Mount Pleasant; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Malcolm Wood, Bill Wood, Joe Neal Wood, John Wood Richter, Charles Wood, Robert Wood and Stephen Wilson. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
